Statment of Intent

Magazine statement of Intent Product 1 (Fashion Magazine) My magazine will be targeting sophisticated 16-25 year olds, the majority of which will be of a male demographic. To appeal to the sophisticated audience, I will be drawing attention to the art form of fashion and photography. My audience research has revealed that using a model of the same age, would be received  very well. This is because the demographic prefer an instant visual of the fashion I have covered. By using a younger model the readership will be able to connect with the magazine better: be able to relate with the models. However, the audience research also concluded that sometimes using an older, celebrity model would also be successful as an icon.   While focusing on fashion and style, I will also address ideologically based issues that my audience have identified as ‘concerns’. My magazine will mostly address  domestic issues, issues that are confined to the country, this helps the magazine to stay relev

The Front cover of issue one, features a long shot of a car and a model. The long shot adds a natural background to the cover, something that contrasts common magazines. The structure of the cover using gray boxes to distinguish text from image is commonly used by magazines such as GQ as an effective way of providing anchorage. The mast head at the top contrasts the calm blue of the background image with a contrasting red. Furthermore the colour pallet used is bold and striking making it appeal more to a youthful readership. The articles link on the front cover is positioned to the top left where it is the first thing a reader will see, due to left to right nature of Latin-ised languages. On the right there is the common breakdown of subsequent articles: this is to breakdown the main articles of the magazine to give the reader a complete understanding of what is in the magazine itself, and to also acts as partial anchors for the articles inside. At the bottom of the cover, there is a

Target market research

My target audience is being defined as males aged 16-24 by the brief. However the demographic that I choose within that was down to my own research and cultural experience of my local area. The causal retro look is common place in seaside towns. The pub and bar aesthetic is gaining a large attraction in modern youth, a contemporary escape from the modern stresses and struggles of a digitally interconnected society. The fashion on the magazine therefore would have to compliment this. A plain casual look, which both supports the alternative indie aesthetic, and contracts the hegemonic view of track suits, sportswear and an anti-social youth. So the magazine must be primarily to show the alternative narrative of youth, which in turn explains the name of my magazine: R:ed. The name is the deconstructed word red. The word red is a denoted alternative to black, which is the primary colour of modern track suits. Arguably the magazines chosen target audience of an alternative youth, is a large

Influences + codes and conventions of the industry.

v Magazine codes and conventions: Following a pluralistic approach to the male fashion industry my magazine will be trying to contrast cultural codes which are otherwise commonly being used in the wide mass media market. The codes in which I wanted to contrast came from modern male magazines, a prime example being the male GQ magazine (pictured below). The GQ magazine features: A close mid-shop of a celebrity who is directly in the middle of the cover. This puts him in direct line of sight of the viewer. The model is suited up and looking smart to emphasize the importance of the model.  The magazine itself has its mast-head/ logo at the top left of the cover to eye-catch. The colour palate used its neutral and compliments the models attire whilst also denoting masculinity through its use of blue and gray. the style is modern, the lettering is minimalist and the use of graphics is profound with paragraph boxes to separate text and a plain background to create depth to the

Cultural understanding.

The major focus for the magazine was the post-modernist aesthetic. Using a combination of old and new techniques and styles to create a nostalgic image for the old and to convey the 'Retro' revival in the youth. The definition of the word retro is :  imitative of a style or fashion from the recent past. The new wave of 'Thrift shop' fashion has peaked in recent times. A cluster of 1980's and 1990's fashion, has gained attraction in vast groups of festival going youth. The magazine will focus also in part the revival of old English resort towns. These resort towns were once the go-to destinations for holiday makers in the mid 20th century. However when packaged holidays became cheap, many people abandoned these towns to go abroad. Following many years of dilapidation and neglect many of these towns, Brighton, Blackpool, Margate. etc, are embarking on a cultural revival, banking mostly on nostalgia of the golden age of such towns.
